Although they may have a beautiful view, they are at an increased risk of their homes getting damaged or destroyed due to coastal erosion events. This is problematic for many people, especially those without the financial means to carry sufficient insurance coverage as a major erosion event could cause them into homelessness.

Erosion events are heavily influenced by a change in tidal flows, rising sea levels, and increased storm activity. These constant changes make it extremely difficult to monitor erosion events.

Each member of this project is highly dedicated to developing erosion forecasts to reduce the impact of coastal erosion on affected residents and communities. To achieve this goal, we will design, program, and monitor cameras that will develop images along the Narragansett coastline. These images will then be used to create erosion forecasts and in return, develop prevention and mitigation efforts.

Dr. Martin Hellwig: Principal Investigator and Research Mentor Why Coastal Erosion?
